Context & meta

Bohemians are a gunpowder and monk civilization in Age of Empires II. Their hallmark is early access to gunpowder: Chemistry and the Hand Cannoneer are available in the Castle Age, well ahead of most civilizations. Their unique Hussite Wagon is a mobile shielding siege unit, and the Houfnice is an upgraded Bombard Cannon with exceptional power. Economically, Mining Camp technologies are free, and Blacksmiths and Universities cost 100 wood less. Their Spearman-line deals +25% bonus damage, and the Monastery techs Fervor and Sanctity also affect Villagers, blending faith and economy. The team bonus makes Markets work 80% faster. With strong gunpowder and monks but limited cavalry, they excel on closed maps like Arena where they can reach their Castle-Age gunpowder spike safely.

History & balance

Bohemians entered Age of Empires II with the Dawn of the Dukes expansion, evoking the Hussite Wars and the famous war-wagon tactics of medieval Central Europe. Their design fuses early gunpowder, a unique mobile siege wagon, and a devout monk-and-economy synergy that captures the religious fervor of the era. Across patches they have been seen as a powerful closed-map specialist, with their Castle-Age Hand Cannoneers and Hussite Wagons forming oppressive defensive-to-offensive compositions. Their weak cavalry and reliance on slower, gold-intensive units keep them out of the very best on open maps, but on Arena and team games they are respected as a distinctive, hard-hitting gunpowder civilization in the Definitive Edition.

In pro play

Strong players use Bohemians as a closed-map and team-game powerhouse, beelining to the Castle Age to unlock Chemistry and Hand Cannoneers before opponents can prepare. On Arena, pros open behind walls, leverage the free Mining Camp upgrades and cheaper Blacksmith/University for a smooth economy, then push out with Hand Cannoneers, Hussite Wagons, and eventually Houfnice for devastating ranged and siege firepower. The Monastery synergy lets them mix Monks for relics and conversions while Fervor and Sanctity also boost their Villagers. Pocket players in team games love the Market team bonus and gunpowder deathball. The playstyle rewards patient, defensive-minded players who can hold early aggression and then unleash a gunpowder timing, rather than fast-map aggressors.

How to counter it

To beat Bohemians, exploit their weak cavalry and slow, gold-hungry compositions. Mobile units like Knights, Camel Riders, and light cavalry can raid their economy and outmaneuver their foot-based gunpowder, which struggles to chase. Since Hand Cannoneers have low rate of fire and miss against fast or scattered targets, use spread-out skirmishers and quick units rather than clumping. Against Hussite Wagons and Houfnice, deploy your own siege, Bombard Cannons, or Mangonels to out-range them, and use cavalry to dive the gunpowder behind the screen. Their Spearman-line bonus is anti-cavalry, so support raids with archers or use Halberdiers cautiously. On open maps, deny them the closed-map comfort they crave by keeping the game fluid, mobile, and economically punishing early.
