Context & meta
The Khmer are a siege and elephant civilization defined by unmatched building freedom and aggressive eco flexibility. They need no buildings to advance to the next Age or unlock other buildings, so a single House can lead straight to a Castle. Farmers don't require Mills or Town Centers to drop off food, Villagers can garrison in Houses, and Battle Elephants move +10% faster. Their unique unit, the Ballista Elephant, is a mobile Scorpion-on-an-elephant that fires bolts through ranks of enemies. Unique techs Tusk Swords and Double Crossbow boost elephants and Ballista Elephants respectively, while the team bonus gives Scorpions +1 range. Khmer excel at fast, building-light openings and devastating late-game siege-and-elephant pushes.
History & balance
The Khmer evoke the mighty Khmer Empire centered on Angkor, a civilization renowned for monumental architecture, sophisticated irrigation and war elephants that carried its armies across Southeast Asia. In the game their identity fuses two ideas: a remarkably free building system that mirrors a society unbound by conventional constraints, and a war-elephant tradition expressed through fast Battle Elephants and the iconic Ballista Elephant. This combination makes them a uniquely fluid civilization whose tech tree rewards bold, unorthodox build orders. Across balance history the Khmer have been prized for the strategic creativity their building freedom unlocks, while their elephant-and-siege late game gives them one of the most fearsome trash-resistant army compositions when allowed to reach critical mass.
In pro play
Pros exploit Khmer building freedom for unconventional, lightning-fast strategies. A signature play is the building-free Fast Castle, where skipping intermediate structures lets them reach Castle Age with extra resources for a fast Castle drop or an early elephant push. The farmer drop-off bonus eliminates Mill walks, enabling tight, efficient eco layouts. On open maps Khmer can pursue an early Scorpion mass amplified by the team bonus and later transition into Ballista Elephants for area-denial fights. Their late game is feared on closed maps like Arena and Black Forest, where Battle Elephants buffed by Tusk Swords plus siege grind through chokepoints. Players who enjoy aggressive timing pushes and creative wall-skipping openings favor Khmer for their sheer flexibility and crushing imperial composition.
How to counter it
Khmer elephants are gold-heavy and slow to mass, so deny gold and harass their economy early. Despite the +10% speed, Battle Elephants and Ballista Elephants remain vulnerable to Monk conversions, Halberdiers and anti-cavalry like Camels, which trade extremely cost-efficiently against expensive elephants. Mass Halberdiers backed by Monks dismantle an elephant army; pick off the Ballista Elephant with archers or skirmishers since it is fragile to massed pierce damage and friendly-fire concerns limit how players cluster them. Their building freedom does not give them stronger units, so a fast Feudal aggression that punishes their light, exposed early economy hits hard. On open maps, avoid clumping infantry against Ballista Elephant bolt pass-through, and keep your army mobile to outmaneuver their slow imperial deathball.
