The Last Chieftains DLC is Available Now!

The wait is over! **The Last Chieftains**, the latest expansion for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, is **available now** on Steam, Microsoft Store, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. Dive into the heart of medieval South America and experience three brand-new civilizations, three gripping campaigns, a sweeping naval overhaul, and much more.

Three New Civilizations

Mapuche

Masters of unconventional cavalry warfare and counter-unit tactics, the Mapuche bring a fierce resistance spirit to the battlefield.

**Unique Units:**

  • **Kona** — A melee cavalryman who deals increased damage to injured targets, perfect for finishing off weakened enemies.
  • **Bolas Rider** — A ranged cavalryman whose projectiles slow down enemy units, crippling retreats and charges alike.
  • Muisca

Dominate the Colombian Andes with economic prowess, piety, and deadly ranged soldiers. The Muisca thrive on gold and faith.

    **Unique Units:**

  • **Guecha Warrior** — A javelineer whose death heals nearby Guecha Warriors, creating a resilient frontline that grows stronger through sacrifice.
  • **Temple Guard** — A heavy infantryman that attacks faster the longer it remains in combat, turning prolonged engagements into devastating routs.
  • Tupi

Command the jungles and coastlines of modern-day Brazil with swarms of infantry and ranged soldiers. The Tupi excel at overwhelming opponents with numbers.

    **Unique Units:**

  • **Blackwood Archer** — An inexpensive ranged soldier that trains in pairs, allowing rapid army composition.
  • **Ibirapema Warrior** — A heavy infantryman who deals area damage, punishing tightly packed formations.
  • Regional Units & Buildings

Several new shared assets bring South American history to life:

  • **Champi Warriors** — Fast infantry who can build Outposts and excel at scouting, raiding, and fighting ranged soldiers. Available to the Inca, Mapuche, Muisca, and Tupi.
  • **Slingers** — Deadly ranged soldiers who spell doom for infantry armies with their anti-infantry bonus damage.
  • **Settlements** — Buildings that support population and serve as dropsites for all resources, offering a unique economic alternative.
  • Three New Campaigns

    Lautaro (Mapuche)

After witnessing his village's destruction, the young warrior Lautaro vows revenge on the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia. Master Spanish tactics and turn them against the invaders in this tale of resistance and cunning.

    El Dorado (Muisca)

Commander Pacanchique is forced to pick a side between two powerful rulers, yet his true loyalty lies with his beloved Azay. This unique campaign can be played from two different perspectives, offering branching narratives and replay value.

    Arariboia (Tupi)

When a rival tribe threatens his people with extinction, chieftain Arariboia resolves to protect them at any cost. Forge an alliance with the Portuguese and fight to reclaim your people's lost homeland.

    Complete Naval Overhaul

Update 169123, launching alongside the DLC, brings a massive rework to naval combat:

  • **Hulk Line** — A brand-new melee ship line (Hulk → War Hulk → Carrack) that counters Fire Ships and fills a gap in naval strategy.
  • **Catapult Galleon** — A new siege ship available to civilizations without access to the Cannon Galleon.
  • **New Naval Technologies** — Medium Warships, Heavy Warships, Carvel Hull, Clinker Construction, Siphons, Incendiaries, and Fishing Lines reshape naval tech trees.
  • **Fishing Ship Rework** — Fishing Ships can now garrison in Docks, harvest gold from Whales, and have adjusted stats for better balance.
  • Inca Rework

The Inca civilization receives a significant overhaul with access to Champi Warriors, Catapult Galleons, and Settlements. In exchange, they lose Eagle Warriors, Lumber Camps, Mining Camps, and Mills — embracing a truly unique playstyle centered around Settlements as their primary economic building.
