Context & meta

Huns are the ultimate aggressive cavalry-and-Cavalry-Archer civilization, defined by not needing Houses at all (they start with -100 wood but never build another House). That freed wood and attention makes Huns one of the fastest-pressuring civs in the game — Scouts and Knights hit early and never stop. Their Cavalry Archers cost -10/20% in Castle/Imperial Age, enabling a powerful Cav Archer transition, and their Trebuchets fire more accurately. The Tarkan unique unit is an anti-building cavalry raider. Huns are a default Arabia pick built entirely around relentless mounted aggression.

History & balance

The no-Houses bonus has been the Hun signature since The Conquerors and remains one of the most distinctive mechanics in the game — it removes a whole layer of macro management and frees wood for military. The -100 wood start was added to balance that advantage. Definitive Edition reworked their unique techs (Marauders giving extra Tarkans from Castles, Atheism countering relic/wonder victories) and tuned the Cavalry Archer discount. Huns remain a benchmark aggressive civ, strong precisely because their bonus accelerates every early-game military timing.

In pro play

Huns are a tournament staple for aggressive players — the no-House bonus means their Scout and Knight rushes arrive with perfect production and zero House-related stutters. Aggressive players use Huns to apply early Arabia pressure, then transition into the cheap Cavalry Archers for a mobile mid-game. The Cav Archer + Hussar + Siege composition is a signature Hun lategame. Because they save so much wood and attention, Huns are also forgiving for fast aggressive builds where House-timing mistakes would normally cost other civs.

How to counter it

Huns rely on early cavalry aggression, so the counter is solid defense and anti-cavalry: wall early (ironically, against the civ that needs no walls of its own), get Spearmen up, and punish over-committed Scouts or Knights. Camels hard-counter their cavalry plan. Their Cavalry Archers are strong but Skirmishers and your own Cav Archers contest them, and Huns have average eco (no eco bonus beyond saved House wood), so a defensive boom can out-scale them. Survive the early pressure and the Hun advantage fades — they are front-loaded, not a late-game economic powerhouse.
