Context & meta

The Malay are a dedicated naval civilization with one of the fastest Age-up paces in the game: advancing to the next Age is +66% faster. Infantry armor upgrades are free, Battle Elephants cost -25% in Castle Age and -35% in Imperial Age, and Fish Traps cost -33% while providing +200% food, giving them a near-limitless water economy. Their unique unit is the Karambit Warrior, a tiny, cheap infantry unit that takes only half a population slot, allowing enormous army sizes. Unique techs Thalassocracy and Forced Levy enhance their docks and infantry. The team bonus gives Docks +6 line of sight. Malay dominate water maps and can leverage cheap massed elephants and Karambit swarms on land.

History & balance

The Malay evoke the great maritime trading empires of the archipelago, such as Srivijaya and Majapahit, whose power rested on control of sea lanes, abundant fishing and far-reaching commerce. The game captures this through their unrivaled fishing economy and lightning Age-up speed, reflecting societies that could mobilize resources with remarkable efficiency. The half-population Karambit Warrior embodies cheap, numerous local levies, while their discounted Battle Elephants nod to Southeast Asian war-elephant traditions. Across balance history the Malay have stood as the definitive water civilization, often considered the strongest pure naval pick, while their absurdly fast aging makes them a wildcard on land, enabling drush, fast Feudal and rush-to-Imperial gimmicks that reward aggressive, tempo-oriented players.

In pro play

On water maps Malay are a pick that is either taken first or banned outright: the +200% food Fish Traps and discounted Fish Traps give them an endless food supply, letting pros out-produce any rival fleet and transition seamlessly into a fully boomed late game. On land, pros exploit the +66% faster Age-up for greedy strategies, hitting Feudal or Castle Age far ahead of schedule to enable fast pressure or an early boom. The cheap Battle Elephants enable a Castle Age elephant push that snowballs with the -35% Imperial discount, while Karambit Warriors flood the field as a population-efficient meat shield in front of archers or against infantry. Players who love water dominance, fast timings and unconventional rush-to-tech builds gravitate to Malay for their unmatched economic and tempo ceiling.

How to counter it

Malay are notoriously thin on bonuses outside water and aging, so on land they often lack the unit-quality edge of other civilizations. Their Battle Elephants, while cheap, are still gold-heavy and slow, and fall to Halberdiers, Camels and Monks just like any elephant army; mass anti-cavalry to trade efficiently against discounted elephant pushes. Karambit Warriors are individually very weak and melt to any area damage, so Mangonels, Scorpions and Onagers obliterate Karambit swarms. Their fast Age-up often comes at the cost of a thinner military or eco at the moment of aging, so scout for greedy timings and punish the window when they age up undefended. On water, only contest Malay if you have a comparable or stronger naval civilization, otherwise deny fish and play for land.
