Technology Effect

"Ships +10% movement speed"

Coach's Tip

Clinker Construction provides an additional 10% movement speed bonus to all ships. Combined with Carvel Hull, this gives a total of 20% speed increase, essential for naval supremacy.

Context & meta

Clinker Construction is an Imperial Age technology researched at the University. It costs 150 food and 100 wood and takes 50 seconds. Ships move +10% faster. It is a second speed step for a developed naval plan, so its value appears when a fleet is large enough to turn movement into repeated engagements, escapes, and map control. The technology does not improve attack, armor, or hit points, and it cannot rescue ships already trapped in a bad fight. Its food and wood cost competes with late production and economy, making the correct question the number of ships that will actually use the faster movement.

History & balance

Clinker Construction is designed as a late naval scaling choice. A second movement bonus increases the map value of a fleet without turning every engagement into a raw damage comparison. It rewards route planning, reinforcement timing, and the ability to choose when ships touch. The Imperial Age price keeps the benefit from appearing before a player has a substantial water investment, while the research window gives an opponent time to contest the University or the shoreline. The upgrade belongs to a mature naval identity: it is powerful when movement is already a resource and inefficient when the fleet is only theoretical.

In pro play

Research Clinker Construction when at least eight to ten ships are already active, especially after the first speed technology has created a fleet that rotates between fronts. Reserve 150 food, 100 wood, and the 50-second University window without stopping the production needed to replace losses. Use the extra +10% speed to choose a fight, reinforce a threatened dock, or leave before a slower fleet closes. Do not research it for a single coastal defense or after the enemy has already secured the water. The upgrade pays over several rotations; if only one engagement remains, units or repairs usually create a stronger immediate timing.

How to counter it

No military unit counters Clinker Construction itself. The classic timing error is paying 150 food, 100 wood, and 50 seconds for a fleet that has no route left to rotate, or researching it after the water is already lost. A practical threshold is eight or more active ships using at least two fronts, usually after the first speed step. Pressure the University, force a fight before completion, control narrow water, and deny the docks that let the faster fleet recover. The opportunity cost is late naval production and economy. If speed keeps making your fleet miss every contact, AoE Coach reads your matchup and gives you the composition and timing.
