Context & meta
Masonry is the Castle Age University technology that strengthens every building rather than a single army line. It costs 150 food and 175 wood and researches in 50 seconds. The official help gives the effect exactly: buildings receive +10% HP, +1 melee armor, +1 pierce armor, and +3 building armor. That makes the investment relevant for a defensive network, production base, or Wonder plan, but it does not create an attacking unit. The timing question is whether the structures will stand long enough for the extra durability to matter before the resources are needed elsewhere.
History & balance
Masonry is a structural technology whose value is spread across the whole base. The Castle Age requirement, 50-second research time, and 150 food/175 wood cost place it after the player has enough buildings for the global effect to matter. The official package combines percentage HP with melee armor, pierce armor, and building armor, so it improves both the time needed to destroy a structure and the damage it takes from different attacks. That breadth explains why the technology is not an emergency button: it is a planned layer that makes a network, production cluster, or Wonder harder to break once the position is established.
In pro play
Research Masonry when the opponent must attack buildings to reach your economy, production, or victory plan. Fifty seconds and 150 food/175 wood are a real opportunity cost, so identify the structures that will stay active: walls, towers, Castles, production buildings, or a Wonder foundation. The +10% HP and armor package is strongest when several buildings overlap in function and buy time for units to arrive. Do not research it after the base is already falling unless the upgraded structures can still hold a key route. A patient player uses Masonry to turn preparation into time, not to replace an army.
How to counter it
Masonry has no combat counter; the classic mistake is to attack an upgraded building network with the same narrow push and assume one extra volley will solve it. The answer is to change the objective: deny the workers and production feeding the structures, open a second angle, or use enough siege and time to overcome the official +10% HP and armor package. Do not let the player complete a 50-second, 150 food/175 wood research for free if the position is not yet safe. If you keep losing to fortified bases without knowing when to pressure or research, AoE Coach reads your match-up and gives you the economy plan and timing.
