Watch Tower
Defensive - FeudalBase values, before building technologies. Masonry and then Architecture each give buildings "+10% HP, +1/+1 Armor": late in a game, the real numbers are higher.

"Defensive tower that fires arrows at enemies. Provides vision and can garrison units for additional arrow fire."
Strategic Analysis
Strategic Role
Watch Towers provide active defense with arrow fire. They can hold key positions and protect vulnerable areas like gold mines.
Key Tactics
Tower Rush (Trush)
Build towers aggressively near enemy resources to deny their economy. This requires significant stone investment.
Defensive Towers
Place towers to protect gold, woodlines, or chokepoints. They force enemies to bring siege or suffer losses.
Garrison Bonus
Garrison villagers in towers under attack. Each garrisoned unit adds an arrow, up to 5 total.
Warning
Towers are expensive and immobile. Rams and siege can destroy them easily. Don't over-invest in static defense.
Stats Analysis
Watch Towers are the basic defensive tower. They can be upgraded to Guard Towers and then Keeps in later ages.
Arrow Damage
5 Base
Moderate damage. Additional garrisoned units increase arrow count.
Stone Cost
125 Stone
Expensive in terms of stone. Consider whether towers are worth the Castle investment trade-off.
Hit Points
850 HP
Low for a defensive building. Vulnerable to siege weapons and concentrated attacks.
Placement Tip
Place towers to cover resources or chokepoints. Avoid isolated towers that can be easily picked off.
Timing Tip
Build towers if you need to protect exposed resources or if executing a tower rush strategy.

Context & meta
The Watch Tower is the basic Feudal Age defensive tower. The building record gives 35 wood and 125 stone, 80 seconds to build, 850 HP, 1 melee/7 pierce armor, line of sight 10, and five garrison spaces. The official help says Ranged Soldiers and Villagers fire additional projectiles from inside, that the tower is strong against Ranged Soldiers, and that it is weak against units at close range, especially rams. It is a protection and vision point, not a substitute for an army: its value comes from where it stands, who is garrisoned, and which resource it makes costly to approach.
History & balance
The Watch Tower is the first step in the standard defensive tower line and therefore marks a transition from mobile defense to permanent map control. It arrives in the Feudal Age at a large stone cost, then can receive line-of-sight, attack, range, HP, armor, and ship-attack improvements before the Guard Tower conversion. That progression explains why one early tower can become a serious anchor later, while a misplaced tower simply freezes 125 stone in the wrong location. The official help keeps the identity clear: the tower multiplies the fire of garrisoned Ranged Soldiers and Villagers, but its close-range weakness remains part of the design.
In pro play
Place Watch Towers for two jobs at once: protect a resource and reveal the approach to it. The 10 line of sight makes the first tower a scouting tool, while five garrison spaces let a small group of Ranged Soldiers or Villagers add fire without standing in the open. Build where the tower closes a path or overlaps another defensive point, not on an isolated tile that melee units can surround. The 35 wood, 125 stone, and 80-second build time are a real Feudal commitment, so coordinate builders with the army and keep the stone income active. Upgrade or abandon according to the map; do not defend a dead resource forever.
How to counter it
The classic mistake is to attack a Watch Tower with Archers or to walk ordinary units under its fire while the defender keeps garrisoning villagers. The official help gives the categories: units at close range, especially rams. Siege Rams absorb the tower fire and turn the 850-HP structure into a timing target, while melee units use the same close-range weakness once the garrison is forced out. Keep the ram covered, deny repairs, and do not let the tower keep vision of your army for free. If you keep losing to Watch Towers without knowing what to produce or when, AoE Coach reads your match-up and gives you the counter composition and timing.
