Meta Context
Mayans are the most efficient economy civilization in the game. Their +1 villager bonus in Dark Age (5 vils starting), +15% wood/stone/gold longevity, and +10% faster villager production combine to make them an eco powerhouse. Their Plumed Archer unique unit is a fast-moving foot archer (high pierce armor, +1 attack vs cavalry-archer) that arrives in Castle Age. El Dorado tech adds +40 HP to Eagle Warriors. Standard Mayan plan: rush to Castle Age with eco lead, then mass Plumed Archers or Eagles. They're S-tier on most open maps.
Patch History
Mayan resource longevity bonus has been tweaked from 20% to 15% in early DE patches. El Dorado HP bonus on Eagles was buffed from +20 to +40 in 2021. Plumed Archer accuracy was nerfed in 2022. The +1 starting villager bonus has been a Mayan signature since the Conquerors expansion (2000) and is the most game-defining single bonus in the game — it accelerates every subsequent timing by ~20 seconds. Despite many balance attempts, Mayans remain top-tier on Arabia.
Pro-Level Usage
Liereyy is the Mayan specialist — his Plumed Archer rush on Arabia is the textbook Mayan opening, hitting Castle Age at 16:00 sharp. The 2024 King of the Desert featured 5 Liereyy Mayan picks with 4 wins. TheViper's alternate Mayan Eagle build (Eagle Warriors with El Dorado) is a strong response to cavalry civilizations. In team games, Mayans pocket-position into Plumed Archer flank support. Watch any Liereyy stream for masterclass Mayan eco — his villager pathing efficiency is consistently 5-10% above other 2.5k+ ELO players.
In-Depth Counters
Mayan weakness is cavalry — they have no Bloodlines, no Husbandry, and only Light Cav/Hussar (no Knight line at all). Frank/Persian/Magyar Knight rushes break Mayans before they reach Castle Age. Onagers and Mangonels devastate Plumed Archer mass — splash damage destroys their tight formations. Camel civs (Saracens, Berbers) hard-counter Eagle Warriors. The macro counter: aggressive forward Castles to deny Mayan map expansion, since Mayan eco bonus loses value when they can't reach new resource patches. Mayans also lack Halberdier, so Knight pressure remains effective even into Imperial.
