Context & meta

Bombard Tower is an Imperial Age technology researched at the University. It costs 800 food and 400 wood and takes 60 seconds. Its official effect is to unlock Bombard Tower construction. The research does not upgrade every existing tower; it gives access to a new defensive building that can be placed where a long-range anchor matters. The price is one of the largest technology investments in the lot, so the question is not whether the building is powerful in theory but whether the next position can use several of them. The University window also competes with other late military technologies.

History & balance

Bombard Tower is designed as an access gate for a specialized defensive structure. The technology separates the choice to unlock the building from the later choice to spend resources and construction time placing it, which makes the commitment visible. Its Imperial Age cost keeps the option from appearing as a general answer to every raid. The building is strongest when a route, choke, or valuable position concentrates movement; it is less meaningful when the player has no time to construct or protect it. The design therefore rewards preparation, map geometry, and a clear defensive objective rather than automatic late-game spending.

In pro play

Research Bombard Tower when at least two planned Bombard Tower sites can protect a choke, Town Center, production area, or valuable approach during the next Imperial phase. Reserve 800 food, 400 wood, and 60 seconds at the University, then protect the builders and keep ordinary units ready for the angles the towers cannot cover. Unlocking the technology is not the same as having the defense: the resource and construction queue still have to produce the buildings. If the opponent is already inside the base, make units first. If the map is open and no position concentrates movement, the same bank may buy more mobile defense.

How to counter it

No military unit counters the Bombard Tower technology itself. The classic timing error is spending 800 food, 400 wood, and 60 seconds to unlock it when there is no protected construction site, or waiting until the attack is already inside the base. A practical threshold is two or more intended Bombard Towers with builders and support ready. Pressure the University, raid the builders, or attack before the unlock completes; after it finishes, use siege and multiple angles rather than feeding units into the finished buildings. The opportunity cost is a full wave of military production. If this defensive unlock keeps arriving before your answer, AoE Coach reads your matchup and gives you the composition and timing.
