Context & meta
Keep is an Imperial Age technology researched at the University. It costs 500 food and 350 wood and takes 75 seconds. It upgrades Guard Towers to Keeps, described officially as stronger. Keep is therefore an escalation for an existing tower network, not a way to create a new tower from nothing. The investment is large in food and wood and the research is long, so it belongs where a strategic position must remain contested: a gold line, a choke, a forward base, or several towers that already shape movement. A single safe tower rarely justifies the full timing.
History & balance
Keep is the late defensive cap of the standard tower line. Its design converts earlier Castle Age positioning into an Imperial Age anchor, so tower play has a path from a first watch point to a serious map-control structure. The long research time and high resource cost preserve counterplay: the opponent can attack before the conversion, bring siege, or choose a different route. A Keep also asks for an active army, because static strength alone cannot protect every angle. In balance terms, it rewards investment that has already shaped the map and punishes an automatic upgrade with no contested objective.
In pro play
Research Keep when two or more Guard Towers already defend a position that the opponent must cross, or when one tower anchors a gold line, choke, or forward base worth holding through the Imperial transition. Reserve 500 food, 350 wood, and the full 75-second University window. Keep units nearby and begin the research before the enemy siege is in position; a finished Keep without support can still be bypassed or surrounded. If the tower network is not producing map value, spend the resources on units, siege, or a second Town Center instead. The upgrade pays through space held, not through the icon alone.
How to counter it
No military unit counters Keep itself. The classic timing error is paying 500 food, 350 wood, and 75 seconds for a tower network that does not protect a contested route, or finishing the upgrade after the siege push has already begun. A practical threshold is two or more Guard Towers with one shared objective, or one decisive position whose loss ends the plan. Pressure the University, attack before completion, and bring siege or use a different angle after the Keep exists. Do not feed units into static fire without a purpose. If Keeps keep deciding where your army can move, AoE Coach reads your matchup and gives you the composition and timing.
