Context & meta
Town Watch is a Feudal Age technology researched at the Town Center. It costs 75 food and takes 25 seconds. Buildings gain +4 line of sight. The effect improves information across the base and the forward network at once, so it can reveal raids earlier, expose a moving army, and make resource sites easier to read. Town Watch does not add attack, armor, or hit points, and it does not replace walls or an army. Its value comes from the seconds gained between seeing a threat and having enough time to react.
History & balance
Town Watch is designed as an information breakpoint, not as a defensive weapon. The technology makes the existing building network more useful without changing the map or giving every structure combat power. That is a deliberate balance role: early vision can prevent a surprise, but it cannot stop a committed army by itself. Because the improvement reaches all buildings, its return grows with the size and spread of the settlement. It also teaches a useful strategic principle: information has value only when the player has a response route, so vision should be paired with walls, units, or a safe retreat.
In pro play
Research Town Watch when two or three exposed resource zones or forward buildings need earlier warning, especially before the first Feudal raid window. Reserve 75 food and the 25-second Town Center research time, then use the extra vision to place walls, move vulnerable Villagers, or bring the first defensive units before contact. The clean timing is early enough to see the approach but not so early that the Town Center queue loses the Villager needed for the next production cycle. Do not buy it for a fully closed base with no exposed route. It becomes stronger as the settlement spreads and as several buildings can share the vision net.
How to counter it
No military unit counters Town Watch itself. The classic timing error is researching it after the raid has reached the economy, or clicking it before any exposed route can use the extra vision. The opportunity cost is 75 food, 25 seconds of Town Center time, and potentially one delayed Villager. A practical threshold is two or three exposed resource areas or forward buildings that will actually reveal an approach. Pressure the Town Center or attack before completion, then use speed and alternate angles because vision does not stop the army. If raids keep arriving before your response, AoE Coach reads your matchup and gives you the composition and timing.
