Description

"Hindustani unique building. A waystation that heals and boosts nearby trade units. Enhances gold income from trade routes."

Strategic Analysis

Strategic Role

The Caravanserai supports trade-based economies. It heals Trade Carts and Caravans, and provides a speed boost, making trade routes more efficient and resilient.

Key Tactics

Trade Route Optimization

Build Caravanserais along trade routes to heal damaged Trade Carts and boost their speed.

Raid Recovery

After a raid on your trade route, Trade Carts heal at Caravanserais without returning to the Market.

Team Game Power

In team games with long trade routes, Caravanserais significantly increase gold income efficiency.

Warning

Caravanserais only help trade units. They are useless if you are not trading or if trade routes are too short.

Stats Analysis

The Caravanserai enhances trade by healing and speeding up trade units that pass nearby.

Heal Rate

Passive

Heals Trade Carts and Caravans in range without requiring them to stop.

Speed Boost

+20%

Trade units near the Caravanserai move faster, reducing travel time.

Cost

200W + 100S

Moderate cost. Worth it for long trade routes in team games.

Placement Tip

Place Caravanserais along the middle of your trade route for maximum benefit.

Timing Tip

Build Caravanserais in Imperial Age when you have established trade routes.

Context & meta

Caravanserai is an Imperial Age economic building available to the Hindustanis and Persians. It costs 175 wood and 50 stone, takes 60 seconds to build, has 2,700 HP, 3 melee armor, 10 pierce armor and 6 line of sight, and cannot garrison units. The official help says it heals Trade Carts and increases their speed within an 8-tile radius. It is not a fighting structure; its value is the extra gold and resilience that a long trade route converts into an army. Without active trade, the investment has no job.

History & balance

A caravanserai was a roadside waystation built for merchants, pack animals and travelers crossing long routes. It offered shelter, water, storage and a safer place to exchange goods, turning a dangerous journey into a chain of manageable stages. That historical role maps cleanly onto the AoE2 building: it does not win a battle by itself, but it keeps the commercial traffic moving after raids and makes a distant route more productive. The design also explains why placement matters so much. A useful caravanserai sits on the path of the trade carts, close enough to matter without becoming an isolated economic gift for the enemy.

In pro play

Treat the Caravanserai as a trade-route checkpoint, not as an automatic reason to start trade. First secure the route with walls, vision and an escort, then place the building where several Trade Carts will actually pass through its 8-tile healing and speed radius. Its 175 wood and 50 stone price is easy to hide inside a team-game boom, but wasteful if the route is short or under constant raid. Queue it before the first carts are wounded, use the speed bonus to shorten dangerous crossings, and keep military pressure away from the recovery point. If the enemy switches to raids, repair the route and protect the building rather than adding a second one blindly.

How to counter it

The classic mistake is attacking the visible army while ignoring the trade route that pays for it. The official help describes an economic building that heals and speeds Trade Carts; it does not provide a combat Weak vs list. Scout the route, kill or force back Trade Carts before the 8-tile radius and pressure the site during its 60-second build window. With 2,700 HP and 10 pierce armor, scattered Archers are wasteful; use a coordinated raid and keep the route unsafe. If you keep losing to Caravanserais without knowing what to produce or when, AoE Coach reads your match-up and gives you the counter composition and timing.
