Base values, before building technologies. Masonry and then Architecture each give buildings "+10% HP, +1/+1 Armor": late in a game, the real numbers are higher.

Description

"Upgraded defensive tower with increased range and attack. Available from the Castle Age, it provides superior area denial against enemy units."

Strategic Analysis

Strategic Role

The Guard Tower is a significant upgrade over the Watch Tower. Its increased range and damage make it effective at defending key positions and resource areas.

Key Tactics

Forward Defense

Upgrade Watch Towers near gold or stone to Guard Towers when reaching Castle Age. The increased range helps protect villagers from raids.

Layered Defense

Use Guard Towers in combination with walls to create kill zones. Units attacking walls become easy targets.

Map Control

Place Guard Towers on hills for even greater range. They become nearly impossible to attack without siege.

Warning

Guard Towers still fall quickly to Mangonels and Rams. Always have units ready to defend your towers from siege.

Stats Analysis

Guard Towers have 25% more HP than Watch Towers and significantly better attack. They are a solid defensive investment in Castle Age.

Hit Points

1500 HP

Durable enough to survive initial attacks. Gives you time to respond to threats.

Range

8

Excellent range allows the tower to protect a large area. Outranges most Castle Age units.

Attack

6

Higher base attack makes each arrow more impactful against armored units.

Placement Tip

Upgrade existing Watch Towers rather than building new ones. Focus on towers protecting key resources.

Timing Tip

Upgrade to Guard Tower in Castle Age if you're playing defensively or tower rushing.

Context & meta

The Guard Tower is a Castle Age defensive building upgraded from a Watch Tower. It costs 125 stone, takes 80 seconds to build, has 1,500 HP, 7 attack, 8 range, 8 pierce armor, 10 line of sight and space for 5 garrisoned units. The official help says garrisoned Ranged Soldiers and Villagers fire additional projectiles; the tower is strong against Ranged Soldiers and weak against units at close range, especially Rams. Its value is therefore area control and time, not a promise that the structure can survive every push. Upgrade existing Watch Towers when the position matters, then use the range and garrison to make the approach expensive.

History & balance

The Guard Tower is the defensive ladder's Castle Age checkpoint: the Watch Tower becomes a stronger structure, and the official help keeps the next destination visible with the path to Keep. Compared with a generic wall, it adds a ranged attack, a garrison and a defined firing zone; compared with a Town Center, it is a focused investment that can be placed where the economy needs protection. The building data makes the trade-off concrete: 125 stone and 80 build seconds buy 1,500 HP, range 8 and 5 garrison spaces. Its history in a match is the history of a location being upgraded from warning to control, while the opponent prepares the close-range answer.

In pro play

Use Guard Towers to protect a resource, a wall corner or a route that the opponent must cross, then make the structure part of a layered defense. Garrison Villagers or Ranged Soldiers when the extra projectiles change the first exchange, keep melee units nearby to punish a dive, and leave room for your army to rotate behind the tower. The 8 range and 10 line of sight are strongest when vision arrives before the attack; a tower placed after the ram is already touching the foundation has missed its job. Prefer upgrading a Watch Tower in a valuable position, keep workers repairing only when safe, and connect towers with walls so close-range units cannot reach the base for free.

How to counter it

The classic mistake is trying to win a Guard Tower fight with Archers, or walking melee units into its arrows without a plan. The official help gives the category: units at close range, especially Rams. In practice, Capped and Siege Rams are direct breach tools: their data gives exceptional building damage and high pierce armor; Petards add an explicit Building bonus and are strong against Towers. Escort the demolition unit and let the ram absorb garrison fire. Do not send one ram alone into a defended position. If Guard Towers keep stopping your push without you knowing what to build or when, AoE Coach reads your match-up and gives you the counter composition and timing.
