Context & meta
Devotion is a Castle Age technology researched at the Monastery. It costs 100 food and 200 gold and takes 40 seconds. The official effect is not a hit point bonus: Units are 15% harder for enemy Monks to convert. It therefore protects the full army from religious pressure, including valuable units that never enter the Monastery queue. Devotion has no direct attack effect and does not stop ordinary damage. Its value is highest when the opponent has several Monks and your army contains expensive units that must cross a conversion zone to reach the fight.
History & balance
Devotion separates conversion resistance from Monk improvement. The design role is defensive and universal: instead of making your own religious group better, it changes the risk calculation for every unit facing an enemy Monk. That keeps the technology relevant to cavalry, siege support, and other gold units without turning it into a general armor upgrade. Its modest research cost and short window create a deliberate choice between preparing for a known Monk threat and spending the same gold on immediate military presence. Devotion is a protection layer, so its payoff depends on the opponent actually presenting conversion attempts.
In pro play
Research Devotion when the opponent has at least three or four Monks and your next army contains six or more valuable units that cannot afford to switch sides. The 100-gold cost and 30-second research time are easy to hide in a Castle Age plan, but the click still pauses Monastery production. Start it before the army enters a Monk-controlled corridor, not after the first conversion has already succeeded. Combine the resistance with ranged focus fire, vision, and a retreat route; Devotion buys time but does not make units immune. If the opponent has no Monks, keep the gold for units or a technology that changes the next fight sooner.
How to counter it
No military unit counters Devotion; it is a conversion-resistance technology. The classic timing error is researching it after the first expensive unit has been converted, or buying it when the opponent has no Monk plan. The opportunity cost is 100 food, 200 gold, 40 seconds, and the Monastery queue that could produce another Monk. A practical threshold is three or four enemy Monks facing six or more valuable units. Pressure the Monastery or force the decisive fight before completion, then use focus fire and distance because the 15% resistance is not immunity. If Monks keep deciding your army fights, AoE Coach reads your matchup and gives you the composition and timing.
