Context & meta

Atonement is a Castle Age technology researched at the Monastery. It costs 325 gold and takes 40 seconds. The official effect is narrow: Monks can convert enemy Monastery Units. That makes it a direct upgrade for conversion wars rather than a general combat bonus. It improves the value of a Monk screen when both players are investing in religious units, because an enemy Monk becomes a legal target instead of a protected support piece. The cost is paid in gold only, so the timing competes directly with additional Monks, relic control, and other Monastery technologies.

History & balance

Atonement gives Monk play a dedicated answer to its own mirror. The design intention is to make a religious battle depend on preparation and information rather than on which player clicks first. Its effect does not improve damage, range, or survivability; it changes the set of legal conversion targets. That narrow identity keeps Atonement meaningful only when the opponent has Monastery Units, while preserving the value of ordinary screens against non-Monk armies. It also creates a clean escalation path: a player who wants a true conversion war must pay for the ability before the war begins.

In pro play

Research Atonement when the opponent has at least three Monks or is adding Monasteries for a conversion fight. Keep 325 gold and the 40-second research time in the plan, then place your own Monks where they can focus enemy Monastery Units instead of chasing ordinary targets. The best sequence is to produce a small group, secure vision, start Atonement before the first Monk clash, and let the upgrade protect later conversions. Do not buy it on a closed map simply because Monks are possible: if the opponent is making Knights, siege, or infantry instead, extra Monks or another technology may change the game sooner.

How to counter it

No military unit counters Atonement; it only changes Monk-versus-Monk conversion rules. The classic mistake is researching it before the opponent has Monastery Units, or researching it after the first conversion war has already decided the map. The opportunity cost is 325 gold, 40 seconds, and a Monastery queue that is not producing Monks. A practical threshold is three or more enemy Monks plus enough of your own group to contest them. Pressure the Monastery, deny vision, or fight before the research finishes; once active, avoid feeding isolated Monks into a prepared group. If you keep losing the conversion window, AoE Coach reads your matchup and gives you the composition and timing.
