Context & meta

Double-Bit Axe is a Feudal Age technology researched at the Lumber Camp. It costs 100 food and 50 wood and takes 25 seconds. Villagers gather wood +20% faster. The effect improves the work of every Villager on wood, so it feeds any plan that needs houses, farms, ranges, docks, walls, or multiple production buildings. It does not add wood instantly and does not improve food, gold, or stone gathering. The upgrade is an early economic breakpoint: its return depends on how many lumberjacks will keep working after the research, not on the Feudal Age label alone.

History & balance

Double-Bit Axe is the first clear investment in the wood economy. Its design makes the early resource split visible: wood supports infrastructure and production, but the technology costs food and wood before it can return anything. The +20% effect is broad enough to serve archers, cavalry, farms, towers, or docks, while the need for active lumberjacks prevents it from being free value. In balance terms, the upgrade rewards a player who has already committed to a wood-heavy plan and creates an opportunity-cost test for an opening that needs immediate military units.

In pro play

Research Double-Bit Axe when at least eight to ten Villagers will work wood through the next Feudal cycle, or when the build needs several wood buildings and farms. Reserve 100 food, 50 wood, and the 25-second Lumber Camp window, then keep enough lumberjacks active for the +20% rate to repay the investment. It is a clean early click for ranged, naval, tower, or farm-heavy openings, but a bad reflex when the next military unit must arrive immediately. Compare the research pause with the first production timing, and move the recovered workers to the next wood bottleneck rather than leaving the bonus idle.

How to counter it

No military unit counters Double-Bit Axe itself. The classic timing error is researching it with too few lumberjacks, or finishing the 25-second window after the opening needed its first unit or house. The opportunity cost is 100 food, 50 wood, and the Lumber Camp queue that could support the next production timing. A practical threshold is eight to ten active woodcutters with a wood-heavy plan. Pressure the Lumber Camp or attack before completion if the opponent has delayed military; otherwise punish the missing units and use your own tempo. If economic upgrade timings keep opening holes, AoE Coach reads your matchup and gives you the composition and timing.
