Evolution

The coach's briefing

Commander, the Armored Elephant is a living battering ram. With +90 bonus vs buildings, it demolishes structures faster than any siege weapon. At 180 HP and 140 pierce armor, it tanks arrow fire indefinitely. Use Armored Elephants to break through fortified positions. They're slow at 0.6 speed but unstoppable against buildings.

Strategic Analysis

Tactical Identity

Siege elephant for building destruction

Tactical Playbook

Building Destroyer

+90 vs buildings is massive. One Armored Elephant can solo destroy a castle with enough time.

Arrow Tank

140 pierce armor means arrows deal 1 damage. You can tank an entire army of archers.

Slow Push

0.6 speed is very slow. Plan your attacks carefully - you can't retreat.

Critical Point

-2 melee armor means cavalry and infantry shred you. Monks also convert you easily. Need support.

Understanding The Stats

Armored Elephants are the ultimate siege unit for South Asian civilizations. Their building damage is unmatched.

Building Killer

+90

Devastating damage to structures

Extreme Pierce

-2/140

Nearly immune to arrows

High HP

180

Very durable

Very Slow

0.6

Slowest siege unit

Coach's Tip

0.6 speed is painful. You commit to an attack and can't back out. Make sure you're attacking the right target.

AoE Coach analysis

Context & meta

The Armored Elephant is a Castle Age siege Cavalry unit listed for Bengalis, Dravidians, Gurjaras and Hindustanis. It costs 120 food and 95 gold, has 180 HP, 4 attack, -2 melee/140 pierce armor, 0.6 speed and 4 line of sight, with a 36-second train time. The official help calls it exceptionally strong against buildings and resistant to most ranged attacks, but weak against the Spearman-line; enemy Monks cannot convert it from distance. Its +90 building and +25 Siege Weapon bonuses define a slow breach tool, not a normal cavalry fighter.

History & balance

Armored Elephant belongs to a regional South Asian siege path rather than a single-civilization unique roster: it costs four available civilizations. Its official upgrade path starts in the Castle Age and points to Siege Elephant at the Siege Workshop in the Imperial Age. The Blacksmith, University and Stable upgrades reinforce the same progression, improving attack, armor, attack, speed and HP as documented. The line is therefore built around structure pressure and a later siege conversion, with 0.6 speed remaining the price of bringing that power to the map.

In pro play

Use Armored Elephants when the objective is a structure and you can buy the time for a 0.6-speed army to arrive. The +90 building bonus and 180 HP make a protected group a serious breach threat, while 140 pierce armor lets it ignore much of the arrow fire that would stop ordinary attackers. The -2 melee armor is the warning: keep a screen between the elephants and close-range counters, and use the immunity to distance conversion to reduce one Monk angle without assuming total safety. Choose the target before committing; this unit is powerful, slow and costly to redirect.

How to counter it

The classic mistake is to answer Armored Elephants with archers and wait for their arrows to matter. The official Weak vs. is the Spearman-line, and the game gives Spearmen +15, Pikemen +25 and Halberdiers +28 against the Elephant class. Those bonus attacks punish the elephant where its 140 pierce armor does not help: at close range, against its -2 melee armor, while the spear wall blocks the route to buildings. Add the counter before the breach begins. If you keep losing to Armored Elephants without knowing what to build or when, that is exactly what AoE Coach does: it reads your match-up and gives you the counter composition and timing.
