Genoese Crossbowman
ArcherBase values, before Blacksmith upgrades. The Blacksmith raises attack and armour for infantry, cavalry and archers — Blast Furnace, for instance, gives "+2 Attack for infantry & cavalry". Late in a game, the real numbers are higher.

ImperialThe coach's briefing
You have +5 bonus vs cavalry at 4 range. This means you deal 11 damage per shot to Knights. With 45 HP and 1/0 armor, you're tankier than regular archers. At 45W/40G, you're affordable. Your main role is to delete enemy cavalry before they reach your lines. Just don't let melee infantry get to you.

Context & meta
Genoese Crossbowman is the Italian unique Foot Archer built to punish mounted units. It costs 45 wood and 40 gold, has 45 HP, 6 attack, 1 melee/0 pierce armor, 4 range, 0.96 speed and 8 line of sight, with a 14-second train time. The official help calls it exceptionally strong against Cavalry and weak against Archery Units and Siege Weapons. Its data gives +5 against Cavalry and +4 against Camels; the Italian civilization bonus adds +1 melee and +1 pierce armor to Foot Archers, so its battlefield profile is stronger than the raw row suggests.
History & balance
Genoese Crossbowman sits inside the Italian Archer-and-Naval identity, and the official civilization description lists it as a unique Foot Archer. Italy gives Foot Archers +1 melee and +1 pierce armor, cheaper Dock and University technologies and -20% gunpowder cost; the unit help adds the Archery Range path to Elite Genoese Crossbowman. The design concentrates the unit on mounted targets: a normal Crossbow profile receives class bonuses and Italian protection, while the fast 14-second train time lets the player turn that specialization into a sustained line.
In pro play
Build Genoese Crossbowmen when the opponent's mounted investment gives the +5 Cavalry and +4 Camel bonuses a clear job. Their 8 line of sight helps them see the approach, and the Italian +1/+1 Foot Archer armor gives the 45-HP body more room against incidental fire, but 0 pierce armor in the base row still warns against ranged duels. Keep the group behind cover, focus one Knight or Camel at a time, and use the 14-second train time to replace losses. Do not chase Siege Weapons; make the cavalry pay for entering the lane.
How to counter it
The classic mistake is to fight Genoese Crossbowmen with Cavalry, feeding the exact bonus they were designed to punish. In practice, the counters are Skirmishers, Siege Onagers, Champions and Eagle Warriors. Skirmishers carry +3 against the Archer class; Siege Onagers use area damage, while Champions and Eagle Warriors close the zero-range gap. Italian armor does not remove the need to deny their preferred mounted target. If you keep losing to Genoese Crossbowmen without knowing what to build or when, that is exactly what AoE Coach does: it reads your match-up and gives you the counter composition and timing.
