Context & meta

Redemption is a Castle Age technology researched at the Monastery. It costs 475 gold and takes 50 seconds. Its effect is specific but broad: Monks can convert enemy Siege Weapons and buildings, except Town Centers, Castles, Monasteries, Farms, Fish Traps, Walls, Gates, and Wonders. Most enemy units can be converted from a distance, while buildings, Rams, and Trebuchets require the Monk to stand adjacent. The upgrade turns a Monk group into a direct answer to expensive siege and exposed infrastructure.

History & balance

Redemption gives the Monastery a role beyond relics and healing. Its design creates a risk exchange: the Monk player invests gold and positioning, while the opponent risks losing a siege weapon or building that already cost resources. The exclusions keep the technology from becoming a universal answer to every structure. Requiring adjacency for buildings, Rams, and Trebuchets also preserves counterplay around screens, walls, and focus fire. In balance terms, Redemption rewards vision and control of space rather than a blind Monk mass. Its value comes from the targets that can be reached safely, not from the button alone.

In pro play

Research Redemption when at least three or four Monks can immediately threaten a visible Siege Weapon, Ram, Trebuchet, or vulnerable building. Reserve 475 gold and the 50-second research window before committing the Monk group, and keep a screen ready because the adjacency rule exposes the converter. It is especially clean after the first Monastery production cycle, when the opponent has committed to siege and your Monks can approach through protected ground. Do not treat it as a generic Castle Age purchase: if no valid target is on the map, the gold may be better spent on Monks, an army, or a defensive structure. Make the first conversion change a real fight.

How to counter it

No military unit counters the technology itself. The classic timing error is researching Redemption after the siege battle, or researching it before any Monk can reach a legal target. The opportunity cost is 475 gold, 50 seconds, and the Monks that are not produced while the Monastery researches. A practical threshold is three or four Monks with a protected path to one expensive siege unit or building; below that, the investment often delays the army that should screen them. Pressure the Monastery or force the fight before completion, then keep buildings, Rams, and Trebuchets screened. If this timing keeps beating you, AoE Coach reads your matchup and gives you the composition and timing.
