Elite Skirmisher
ArcherBase values, before Blacksmith upgrades. The Blacksmith raises attack and armour for infantry, cavalry and archers — Blast Furnace, for instance, gives "+2 Attack for infantry & cavalry". Late in a game, the real numbers are higher.

ImperialThe coach's briefing
The Elite Skirmisher is your upgraded archer-killer. With 4 pierce armor and +4 bonus against archers, you dominate any ranged fight. Your 5 range lets you outrange basic archers and trade efficiently. You're still a trash unit - no gold cost means infinite production. Use this to shut down crossbow aggression in Castle Age while saving gold for Knights or siege. Remember, any melee unit destroys you. Keep your distance, stay behind your front line, and let archers come to you.

Strategic Analysis
Tactical Identity
The Elite Skirmisher is the **hard counter** to any archer-based strategy. At Castle Age, when Crossbows become dominant, Elite Skirms are your gold-free answer to maintain army parity.
Tactical Playbook
Crossbow Counter
When enemy masses Crossbows, match their production with Elite Skirms. You trade 0 gold vs their 45 gold per unit. Over time, you win the resource war.
Defensive Screen
Position Elite Skirms in front of your siege or behind your Knights. They absorb arrow fire and punish any archer that tries to kite your melee units.
Trash Wars Support
In late game, Elite Skirms counter Halberdiers that counter your Hussars. The trash triangle: Skirms beat Halbs beat Hussars beat Skirms.
Critical Point
Cavalry and infantry will shred you. Your 0 melee armor and low HP means even Light Cavalry 3-shot you. Never let enemies close the distance.
Understanding The Stats
The Elite Skirmisher takes everything good about the Skirmisher and improves it. Better armor, better bonus damage, and crucially - more range to outshoot basic archers.
Enhanced Pierce Armor
4 pierce armor means Crossbows deal only 1 damage to you. You can tank 35 arrows before dying - incredible efficiency.
Archer Killer
Combined with 3 base attack, you deal 7 damage to archers. Crossbows have 35 HP. 5 shots to kill while tanking 35 of theirs.
Range Advantage
1 more range than basic archers. You shoot first, forcing them to either retreat or take bad trades.
Trash Economy
Still 25 Food, 35 Wood. The upgrade costs 230W/130G - extremely affordable and pays for itself fast.
Coach's Tip
Your 4 pierce armor is your superpower. Calculate: Crossbows deal 5 attack - 4 armor = 1 damage. You have 35 HP. That's 35 shots to kill you! Meanwhile, you kill them in 5 shots.

Context & meta
The Elite Skirmisher is the Castle Age upgrade that gives the anti-archer line its full ranged profile. It costs 25 food and 35 wood, no gold, and has 35 HP, 3 attack, 5 range, 0 melee/4 pierce armor, 0.96 speed and 7 line of sight. The official help keeps the same identity: it cannot attack at close range, is strong against Ranged Soldiers and the Spearman-line, and is weak against units that reach melee. Its Archer class carries +4 against Archers, +2 against Cavalry Archers and +4 against Spearmen, so its value comes from bonus damage and protection, not raw attack.
History & balance
Elite Skirmisher is the Castle Age step that turns a Feudal anti-archer response into a durable trash composition. The official help connects it to Blacksmith attack, range and armor, University attack and accuracy, and the Archery Range conversion to Imperial Skirmisher. That path explains the unit's place in the roster: it is not a new combat role, but a stronger version of the same ranged denial. More range, one extra pierce armor and stronger Archer bonuses improve its trades while the inability to attack at close range remains unchanged.
In pro play
Research Elite Skirmisher when the Castle Age fight is being decided by Crossbows, Archers or other Ranged Soldiers, then keep production aligned with the pressure you have scouted. Five range and 4 pierce armor let the group trade into arrows while its +4 Archer bonus supplies the damage. The unit still has 0 melee armor and cannot attack at close range, so it needs space, a front line or terrain that denies contact. Focus fire, avoid chasing into a cavalry screen, and use the no-gold cost to keep your economy flexible for Knights or siege without asking the Skirmishers to do every job.
How to counter it
The classic mistake is to treat Elite Skirmishers as universal infantry and send them into a cavalry or Champion fight. The official Weak vs. is units at close range; the unit data names Light Cavalry, Knights, Hussars and Champions. Those units reach the formation and bypass the Elite Skirmisher's ranged advantage, while 0 melee armor and no close-range attack leave little room to recover. Do not be distracted by the +4 Archer bonus: it is powerful only against the class it names. If you keep losing to Elite Skirmishers without knowing what to build or when, that is exactly what AoE Coach does: it reads your match-up and gives you the counter composition and timing.
