Context & meta
Gambesons is a Feudal Age technology researched at the Barracks. It costs 50 food and 100 gold and takes 25 seconds. Militia-line units and Fire Lancers gain +1 pierce armor. The official effect therefore reaches the core Infantry line and the Fire Lancer category, improving survival against ranged fire while those units close. It does not add melee armor, attack, or hit points. Gambesons is a focused protection upgrade: its value appears when several affected units will cross arrows, and its gold cost competes with the Infantry and support needed to turn that approach into a fight.
History & balance
Gambesons is designed as an early answer to the tension between Infantry and ranged fire. The +1 pierce armor does not make the Militia line win every exchange; it gives the group more time to reach the distance where Infantry can work. Including Fire Lancers in the official effect broadens the technology without turning it into a universal armor upgrade. Its low food price and high gold share make the opportunity visible in Feudal Age, when gold is also needed for military units and Castle Age plans. Gambesons rewards a player who has chosen contact and needs the line to survive the approach.
In pro play
Research Gambesons when at least five Militia-line units or Fire Lancers will cross an archer line during the next pressure window. Reserve 50 food, 100 gold, and the 25-second Barracks window, then keep the affected units together so every extra pierce armor point buys approach time. It is strongest before the first ranged engagement, not after the Infantry has already been forced away. Pair the protection with a route through buildings, terrain, or a screen; Gambesons does not solve melee counters. If the opponent is not using ranged fire and your group is small, spend the gold on units or another upgrade.
How to counter it
No military unit counters Gambesons itself. The classic timing error is researching it after the Infantry has crossed the ranged zone, or paying 50 food, 100 gold, and 25 seconds for too few affected units to use the armor. A practical threshold is five or more Militia-line units or Fire Lancers facing real pierce damage. Pressure the Barracks, fight before completion, or switch to melee and siege so the +1 pierce armor matters less. The opportunity cost is gold that could become Infantry. If armored approaches keep reaching your back line, AoE Coach reads your matchup and gives you the composition and timing.
