Strategic Analysis
The Castle is the pinnacle of medieval fortification. It fires powerful arrows, produces your civilization's unique unit, and can hold an entire army in garrison. A well-placed Castle can single-handedly control an area of the map.
- Defensive Castles: Place Castles at choke points or near your Town Centers. A Castle covering your main gold can make your economy nearly unraidable.
- Forward Castles (Castle Drop): Build a Castle aggressively near the enemy base to pressure their economy. This risky play can win games if executed correctly.
- Trebuchet Production: Trebuchets are the only units that can safely destroy enemy Castles. Always have Trebuchets ready for late-game siege.
- Unique Unit Mass: Your civilization's unique unit is often extremely powerful. Multiple Castles enable mass production of these game-changing units.
Warning: Castles require 650 stone. Secure stone mines early and consider buying stone from the Market if needed.
Meta Context
The Castle is the most strategically pivotal building in AoE2. With 4800 HP, 11 Castle-Age unique unit production, +5 attack, and an 11-tile range when garrisoned (40-arrow capacity), it both defends and projects power. The Castle drop — placing a Castle within attack range of an opponent's economy — is the most decisive aggressive move on Arabia, often game-ending if it lands well. Cost: 650 stone, requiring dedicated stone-mining commitment. Castles also enable Trebuchets (the only generic siege capable of reaching from outside Castle range), Petards, Conscription tech, and unique civilization technologies.
Patch History
Castle HP has been adjusted multiple times — originally 4500, raised to 4800 in DE to make Castle drops more committed strategic bets. Garrison limit changed from 25 to 40 arrows in DE. Cost has been stable at 650 stone since the original AoE2. The 2022 patch added a 30-second "vulnerable window" where freshly-built Castles take +25% damage to balance forward-Castle aggression. Frank Castle cost discount dropped from 25% to 20% in 2021. As of 2026, Castle balance is one of the most-discussed topics in pro-player Discord servers.
Pro-Level Usage
TheViper's "Castle drop" forward strategies on Arabia are signature aggressive plays — placing a Castle inside the opponent's base while they're busy with their own Castle Age transition. On Arena, the meta is 2-3 Castle drops in late Castle Age to suffocate the opponent. Hera's defensive Castle play (always placing Castles on hill terrain for elevation bonus) is studied by intermediate-level players. The 2025 KotD V finals featured a TheViper forward Castle on minute 21 that won the entire series.
In-Depth Counters
Trebuchets are the canonical Castle counter — they outrange the Castle's 11-tile arrow range with their 16-tile attack range. Two Trebuchets safely break a Castle in ~90 seconds. Bombard Cannons (12-range) work but require Chemistry. Petards detonate Castles with 175 damage per Petard — 25 Petards delete a fully-garrisoned Castle in one volley. The macro counter to forward-Castle aggression: contest the opponent's stone mining before they have 650 stone. Stone harassment (raiding the stone gathering point) often prevents the Castle from being built at all.
