Description

"Military building that trains infantry units. Available from the Dark Age, it is the foundation of any land army."

Strategic Analysis

Strategic Role

The Barracks is your gateway to infantry power. It enables early military pressure and forms the backbone of trash-based compositions in the late game.

Key Tactics

Dark Age Rush (Drush)

Build a Barracks with your 6th-7th villagers to produce 3 Militia. Use them to disrupt enemy economy before they wall.

Men-at-Arms Opening

Upgrade Militia to Men-at-Arms upon reaching Feudal Age for a powerful early aggression that can break through palisades.

Spearman Defense

If you scout early Scouts or Knights, immediately queue Spearmen. They are the most cost-effective counter to cavalry.

Late Game Trash Wars

When gold runs out, Halberdiers become your primary military unit. Multiple Barracks allow you to sustain production during intense battles.

Warning

A Barracks without Squires in Castle Age means your infantry will never catch archers. Prioritize this upgrade for infantry civs.

Stats Analysis

The Barracks is surprisingly durable for an early-game building. With 1200 HP and 7 pierce armor, it can absorb significant archer fire, making it useful as a forward staging point.

Hit Points

1200 HP

Standard military building health. Can withstand considerable punishment but will fall quickly to siege weapons or large raiding parties.

Pierce Armor

7 PA

High pierce armor makes the Barracks resistant to archer harassment. Each arrow from a Crossbowman deals only 1-2 damage.

Build Time

50s

Takes nearly a minute to complete. In Dark Age rushes, start construction early enough to have Militia ready before your opponent walls.

Garrison Capacity

10 Units

Can protect up to 10 units from enemy raids. Garrisoned units fire arrows from the building, providing additional defense.

Wood Cost

175 Wood

Relatively affordable. Building multiple Barracks is viable in late game for mass infantry production.

Placement Tip

Place your Barracks near your Town Center for quick reinforcements, or forward near the enemy base for early aggression. In late game, spread multiple Barracks to avoid losing all production to a single siege attack.

Timing Tip

Build your first Barracks at 6-7 villagers for a Drush, at 10-11 for a Men-at-Arms rush, or at 17-18 for a Scout opening with Spearman backup.
